15. Chat z Josephem Williamsem - 21 maj 2005r.

Moderator
Hello everyone, and welcome to www.toto99.com! Today as part of our Live Chat feature, we have a very special guest to interview - Joseph Williams! We have no questions "in the can" and this interview will come entirely from you, the fans, interspersed with some comments from the moderator while we're reviewing your queued questions. Welcome Joe, and thanks for taking the time to do this!

kristinaschildren
Joseph, have you been asked to be a singer in another band before/after TOTO?

Joseph_Williams
Hello everyone! I was asked to be the singer for Jeff Osbourne. But for a band -- like an existing band like Toto, the answer is no.

kristinaschildren
Joseph, have you studied for some profession after high school or have you always known that you're going to be a singer?

Joseph_Williams
When I got out of high school, I took classes at a city college to get a minimum degree to go into the air force and fly jets, if you can believe it! Several members of my family were in the air force. During that time -- while I was taking classes -- I started to get some work singing on commercials from friends, including Gary Fasman. Once I started singing, I quite the idea of the military.

Gizmo
when can we expect Vertigo II?

Joseph_Williams
Very good question! I was hoping we'd be finished with it some time ago. There seems to be some family issues with the gentleman who is producing. We've been waiting for tracks for six months. We're on hold. We may try and find someone else to produce them. It's the same team as the first Vertigo album, but like I said, our original producer is having some family issues. This is primarily an album of outside material. Songs have been provided to choose from, but I've written some myself as well.

kristinaschildren
Joseph, what do you like to do on your free time?

Joseph_Williams
I spend a lot of time with my kids. That's generally it. If I REALLY have time to myself, I'm a huge movie buff and I love to study movie scores and everything that has anything to do with film interests me. I play golf with my father every once in a while as well. Swimming, the beach. That sort of thing.

Reckless_Heart
I love the work of your father. In fact, I think he's the best classical composer of the 20th century (not to say he's the best film composer ever). Do you still work with him, sometimes? If not, will you?

Joseph_Williams
I have worked with my father. When he has something that I can do, he does hire me. He'll never give me a job just for the sake of giving me a job. I did a few things for Episode I and II for Star Wars. I did a few things for A.I. Artificial Intelligence. The first thing I ever did was when I was 15 years old. I wrote some songs for the movie "The Fury."

Moderator
Which songs of all the songs you recorded are you most proud of?

Joseph_Williams
Well, Pamela of course. I had a lot to do with that composition. It came out great! One of the most fun songs to sing! I'm very proud of the way that came out. It takes a close second to Till the End.
Another I should mention in terms of something completely different -- Only the Children and especially Lea! That song was very detailed and concentrated and difficult work. It was very much out of my range! So the end result was very satisfying for me. Somewhere Tonight, live, was the easiest and most fun for me to sing so I loved that one as well.

tamboe
Which Toto album would you really wanted to be the lead singer of, besides Fahrenheit and TSO?

Joseph_Williams
The obvious answer would be Toto IV -- but it was too brilliant the way it was, so that would be sacrilegious! I would have loved to be a part of the bigger hits. But the record I really would have liked to be in was Mindfields. Really the only reason for that would have been was because my juices were flowing for song ideas. They used a song I wrote too, which was great. Having Bobby back was definitely right choice.

Moderator
Luke mentioned in an e-mail that he would like you to record some overdubs on the new Toto Record and that they might be calling you.

Joseph_Williams
Yes I'm waiting with baited breath!!! I would love nothing more than to come in and do whatever I can and be of service however I can!
It was so cool of Luke to say that, and to know that he considers me family, and I of course feel the same way. I have such tremendous respect for the "Toto Empire." And I am READY to record with them!

Moderator
Have you heard anything yet of the new album?

Joseph_Williams
I have not, no. Unfortunately!

Dave--39-s_Gone_Surfing
What memories do you have of your close work with Chicago back in the Eighties?

Joseph_Williams
I have TONS of great memories. I've been lucky to be involved with them many times in many different ways. I sang on their most recent record, which will be coming out shortly. Jason wrote a song I sang on the demo, so I sang on the record about 2 months ago. My first memory with these guys was "What You're Missing" which I wrote with my ex brother in law for Chicago 16. My next involvement was backgrounds on the first Jason Scheff record.

josephwilliams-tk
do you have any concrete ideas for starting an official website?

Joseph_Williams
Ideas aplenty -- and I've got a couple of names that I've locked up so that I could have a choice. JosephWilliams.com was taken! My corporation that I use for my music is called Digby Road, so I may use that. At the very least, that will be an e-mail an address where fans can send me questions directly. But not yet -- soon!

tamboe
What is your BEST memory you have with Toto?

Joseph_Williams
Getting the phone call from Jeff Porcaro telling me that I was in the band -- 1986. I was broke, living in a motel! I'd worked for Jeff Osbourne, and still had a few shows left to do on his tours. I didn't save my money, so I was living in squalor at the time! This was in Western LA. I had met with the guys and went into the studio to sing live and had a blast. Then I went into the studio and started working directly on the song Fahrenheit -- that was one of my first tests.

Moderator
That song sounds like it was written for Michael Jackson!

Joseph_Williams
Yes, there's a small chorus part "Promise Me Tonight" was very David Paich. When I came into the studio, I turned it into a bit of a Michael Jackson style. It's one of the most dated things that I did with them -- but it was fun!

Moderator
What else are you listening to apart from Film music?

Joseph_Williams
Right now the one album that is in my car that I play over and over is Keane. They're a trio -- keys, drums, and a singer. It's a wonderful wonderful group -- Beatles-esq, they sound like ELP.... Singer sounds like Bono... I just love that group!
I have 2 daughters, one of which turned 10, the other 8. I HAVE to listen to things like Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan -- I can't help it! Not my choice!

Moderator
Luke's son Trev recently toured with Lindsay Lohan!

Joseph_Williams
Actually, Luke told me that and my daughters flipped out when I told them I knew somebody who was playing with her. Everyday since then they've been begging me to meet her.

tomb
Now, with Paich slowing down, what do you think about the introduction of Greg P to the Toto family??

Joseph_Williams
Well I think it's wonderful. You couldn't ask for a better player. I worked with Greg in Jeff Osbourne's band for a short time. He's such a wonderful player and singer. To be honest with you, he would have been the last person I thought of to cover Dave. I'm thrilled for them and I'm thrilled for Greg.

Sundet
You did two fantastic tours with Jay Graydon's band in the mid-90's. Would you ever jump on such a tour again if the opportunity came?

Joseph_Williams
If they asked, I would be out there in a New York Minute! I miss road work very very much! I love writing for TV and Film, and when I can get the work I enjoy it. I've always been better suited, however, to live playing and performance. Unfortunately, I don't get a chance as often anymore. But YES! In a second!

Moderator
Jay Graydon has said that you and Luke are like his brothers.

Joseph_Williams
Well I feel the same thing about him. Jay helped me through some really rough times and he's responsible for putting me back to work and I credit him as keeping me in the business!

Moderator
Can you tell us a little bit about your studio set up at Digby Road? Keyboards, desk, computer etc.

Joseph_Williams
I'm using Macintosh G5 as my main computer -- I'm running both Logic and Performer mainly because I'm working with Snuffy Walden, and he is a performer. So I like to keep my chops up -- I primarily prefer to use Logic. I have a second G5 that uses performer as a host for soft synths. That's the main setup! Other than that, I have a few external boxes left, although they're slowly disappearing because everything is becoming internal and Soft Synth oriented.

Moderator
Who do you keep in touch with the most from all your brothers in the Toto family? I believe you're still quite close with Steve Porcaro?

Joseph_Williams
Yeah, Steve Porcaro for sure. We've remained close since the day I joined the group. I got very close to Dave while in the group, and I've always been close with Lukather. Luke played on my original solo album in 81, and he was a great friend and I always run into him. Luke I consider family more than any of the others because I've known him so long, although the Williams Family and the Porcaro Family have been close since before I was born!
Since Steve and I are doing similar work, we keep in touch the most. We talk very regularly -- not a week goes by that we don't speak.

Moderator
While we're on the subject of your friendship with Luke, can you tell us some of your favorite memories of times you've spent with him over the years?

Joseph_Williams
The one that jumps out more than any other, one evening following a show we were in the bar of the hotel we were staying out. Luke, JJ, and I had a slap fight while we were drinking. It went on for what seemed like hours! I can't speak to whether THEY remember it, but I do!!! The best was the next morning, waking up and seeing how puffy everyone was.

Moderator
hahahahah! what were you drinking?

Joseph_Williams
Good god -- Scotch! I'm not sure what they were drinking that night!
Another memory....
Lukather and I would have this regular routine where I would shoot 10-15 seconds everywhere around the world, and he would look at the camera and say "Fuck you and get that camera out of my face!" So I edited it together so it's hours and hours of Luke saying that in all over different climates!

Moderator
ok what did we have to get hold of these videos!!
hahaha excellent!

Joseph_Williams
I'd love to convert it to DVD and give it to the guys to see if there's anything useful that might be fun.

Moderator
I'm sure a lot of your fans would be interested to know if you're planning on recording another solo album!!

Joseph_Williams
The answer is I am prepared as many albums as I can before I leave this earth! In terms of when that will be and how it will all come about, I have no specific answers. But whenever the opportunity comes up, I take it. I'll keep doing it till I drop! And of course, anything I can do for the Toto guys I'd do in a heartbeat!
Vertigo 2 -- which is on hold --I hope comes together and I hope I can start working on it again in the next couple of months. If there's a request for a third, I'll do it. And if there's other requests, I'll do it!

Tina
What was the reason you started singing? Do you have an idol, other than your father?

Joseph_Williams
Number one was the Beatles -- Paul McCartney in particular. Number 2 -- Stevie Wonder for sure.

ana_maria
How old are your kids and are they in show business?

Joseph_Williams
Well my daughter is having her regularly weekly Piano Lesson as we speak! I have a strict rule, which is if they want to do something with music, they must learn to read and write music. I've had to teach myself because of the nature of the work I do, but that was never really enforced as a child. My 10 year old is showing some VERY serious talent with it! As my father is fond of saying to her, "Talent skips a generation."

Moderator
That's extraordinary, especially as your father is such a legendary composer.....

Joseph_Williams
Well he was just too busy! Lessons were offered, but my mother passed away when I was a small kid and my father's career was taking off at that time, so he had to see that to conclusion. So I didn't have a lot of supervision. All the opportunity in the world was afforded to us if we wanted it, but I chose not to.

kristinaschildren
Do you have any pets?

Joseph_Williams
Wow yes! 4 dogs -- Digby is the oldest -- 4 horses, and 2 cats.

Moderator
That's great, thank you Joe! Is there anything YOU would like to say to your fans on the Toto website?

Joseph_Williams
I'm tremendously gratified that there is interest in what I'm doing. It feels like a lifetime ago that I was involved with the group, although I've always remained and always will be connected. It never ceases to surprise me that there's interest. I'm happy to be involved and talk to them anytime I can and let them know what's up. It's a real treat and it makes the whole experience that much more worthwhile.

Moderator
It's been a real pleasure chatting with you Joe. On behalf of all your fans who have logged in today and those who will read the transcript later, thank you so much for your time.

Joseph_Williams
Thanks again everyone. Until next time!
